Individual tax filers regardless of income can use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic extension of time to file their federal income tax return. Filing an extension gives you extra time to e-file your return, but the deadline to pay any taxes owed remains April 15, 2024.
You can file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return, by mail or online. If you file online, you will not need to fill out a paper Form 4868 line-by-line.
