File an Automatic Extension for Business Income Tax Returns with Form 7004
Overview
WEB Form 7004 is used to request an automatic 6-month extension for filing business income tax returns. This includes Form 1120 (Corporate Income Tax Return), Form 1065 (U.S. Return of Partnership Income), Form 1120-S (U.S. Income Tax Return for an S Corporation), and Form 1041 (U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts).
E-Filing Form 7004
Form 7004 can be e-filed through the Modernized e-File platform, which is available through authorized e-file providers. The extension must be filed prior to the due date of the return to be extended. For example, if the due date of your Form 1120 is March 15, 2023, you must e-file Form 7004 by March 15, 2023.
Restrictions on Form 7004
It's important to note that Form 7004 only grants an extension of time to file, not an extension of time to pay any taxes that may be due. If you do not e-file Form 7004 by the due date, you may be subject to penalties for late filing.
