Heat Pump Sales Surge, Breaking Records
2022 Market Report Reveals Significant Growth
Declining Sales Raise Concerns for Renewables Targets
In a major breakthrough for the energy transition, heat pump sales shattered records in 2022, with over 3 million units sold, marking a remarkable 389% year-on-year increase. However, recent data from a report published in June 2023 cast a shadow over this growth, revealing a concerning decline in heat pump sales.
According to the report, heat pump sales surged by 39% in 2022, contributing to a total stock of 20 million heat pumps worldwide. However, the report also highlights that this growth trajectory has slowed down, putting key targets at risk.
Heat pumps, widely recognized as a critical clean energy technology, are essential in achieving net-zero emissions goals. The decline in sales threatens the EU's ambitious target of 49% renewable energy in heating by 2030 and the installation of 60 million heat pumps to meet this target.
Despite the latest setback, heat pumps remain the central technology in the global transition to secure and sustainable heating. By harnessing low-emissions electricity, heat pumps offer an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel-based heating systems.
