Japan Struck by 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Warnings Issued
At Least Four Dead as Quake Rocks Western Region
Latest Updates and Impact Assessment
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has shaken western Japan, triggering tsunami warnings and leaving at least four people dead. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning for coastal areas of Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and Kochi prefectures, urging residents to evacuate to higher ground.
The quake struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture at 4:42 p.m. ET on Thursday, at a depth of about 30 kilometers (18 miles). The JMA later revised the magnitude to 7.1, but the earthquake's shallow depth and proximity to land made it particularly destructive.
Authorities are still assessing the damage, but buildings have collapsed and infrastructure has been damaged. The JMA has also warned of the possibility of aftershocks, and residents are advised to be prepared.
