Chess Player Arrested for Alleged Poisoning Attempt
Russian authorities investigate incident at regional tournament
Suspect allegedly caught on film lacing opponent's board with liquid
Police in the Russian republic of Dagestan are investigating an alleged poisoning attempt at a regional chess tournament earlier this month. One competitor, Amina Abakarova, a 40-year-old chess pro from Makhachkala, has been suspended by the Russian Chess Federation pending the outcome of the investigation.
According to reports, Abakarova was caught on film lacing her opponent's board with liquid. The alleged incident occurred before a match, and the liquid has yet to be identified. The victim did not show any symptoms of poisoning and the match proceeded as planned, but the incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the sport.
The Russian Chess Federation has condemned the alleged poisoning attempt and is cooperating with police in the investigation. Abakarova has denied any wrongdoing, and her attorney has stated that the allegations are baseless.
