Pitchers Jack Flaherty, JT Brubaker to Return to Mound
Cardinals' Flaherty, Pirates' Brubaker Expected to Make Season Debuts This Week
Flaherty to Start Tuesday; Brubaker to Relieve Wednesday
Two pitchers are set to make their season debuts this week. St. Louis Cardinals' Jack Flaherty will start Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh Pirates' JT Brubaker, meanwhile, is expected to relieve Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Flaherty missed the first month of the season with a shoulder injury. He made two rehab starts in the minors, allowing two runs in eight innings.
Brubaker also missed the start of the season with an injury. He made one rehab start in the minors, allowing one run in three innings.
Both pitchers are expected to be on a pitch count in their first outings.
Flaherty's Return a Boost to Cardinals' Rotation
Flaherty was one of the Cardinals' best pitchers in 2021. He went 9-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 15 starts.
The Cardinals' rotation has been shaky in Flaherty's absence. The team is 10-16 this season with a 4.72 ERA.
Flaherty's return should help stabilize the rotation and give the Cardinals a chance to make a run at the playoffs.
Brubaker's Return a Welcome Addition to Pirates' Bullpen
Brubaker was a key part of the Pirates' bullpen in 2021. He pitched in 64 games, posting a 3.29 ERA.
The Pirates' bullpen has struggled this season, with a 4.82 ERA.
Brubaker's return should help improve the bullpen and give the Pirates a chance to compete for a wild-card spot.
